nefish1 When something is so remarkable and wonderful that it seems to defy explanation or articulation, it is easier to use the word, "magical." And it is. Favorite track: More Than Boys.

Moo These songs have aged beautifully and Luke sings them with a depth and passion of 10 years well lived.

moremusic63 It's amazing how Luke has lived and grown into his own songs from 10 years ago - beautifully played, wonderfully performed and very moving. Favorite track: Kitchener Road.

martin smith I loved the original version of this album. This revisit is even better. It is astonishing how much Luke's playing has improved and voice has matured (he was pretty good ten years ago).

about

Back in 2012 aged 18 I was lucky enough to be under the wing of Martyn Joseph and early in the year went to his studio for 3 days and recorded the 11 tracks for my debut album, ‘More Than Boys’. I had been writing songs since I was 11 and there was no shortage to choose from, so we took the best of my then live set and had the idea of doing pretty much guitar & vocal takes for them all so as to replicate this straightforward solo feel, with a sprinkling of some very minimal production.

Luckily the album was very well received and reviews were full of comments like ‘coming of age’, ‘rites of passage’, ‘move into adulthood’ and that sort of thing, particularly in relation to songs like ‘Bakers Woods’, ‘Big Hill’ and ‘More Than Boys’. However, back then I never quite got these interpretations of the songs as, as always, I was writing about things that were relevant to me at the time without making any broader statements or considering what the wider implications might be.

In the 10 years since ‘More Than Boys’ some songs have been in my set fairly consistently, some have come and gone, and a few have never really been played live at all!

In deciding to put out a 10 year anniversary release it’s safe to say I have fallen back in love with the album, and it’s clear that what the songs meant to me as an 18 year old is very different to that of my 28 year old self.

It’s very odd to feel like I have almost ‘grown into’ my own songs! So ‘Bakers Woods’, about a day spent climbing trees with mates in a favourite place, was written in response to worrying about losing touch with them when we left school and went our separate ways, now feels like lovely, fuzzy nostalgia, as does the buddy feel of ‘More Than Boys’, whilst with ‘Big Hill’ I now experience a real resignation and loss that I know I hadn’t gone through when I wrote the song all that time ago.

Other songs just change because of time. ‘How Does It Feel’ was written about what parents might feel when their children leave home. Of course, me and my sister have now done this and she has a child of her own, so the song just goes on to the next generation and should last forever!

I have kept faithful to the original recordings and everything here is my voice, guitar and kick drum captured live in one take. I think I am a better guitarist and singer 10 years on so some of the arrangements are slightly different to reflect this, but I would like to think this also brings more depth and the ‘lived in feel’ that the passing of 10 years inevitably brings.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it, both in 2012 and 2022.
